Fire safety checks – Fire resistance
Fire safety checks – Fire resistance is a key feature for maintaining fire safety. This short list will help managers work out whether the fire resistance in the workplace is adequate.
- Are areas of high risk enclosed in fire resisting construction?
- Where only a single staircase or escape route exists in a building, is it enclosed in fire resisting construction or protected by another means? eg fire alarm
- Where more than one escape route exists, are they separated from each other by fire resisting construction?
- Are service openings in floors and walls “stopped” with fire resisting material. This also includes openings above “false ceilings” and below “false floors”.
Most fire marshal course do not go into great detail about fire resistance in buildings. However, our PAS 79 fire risk assessments do consider fire resistance.
