Live fire extinguisher training – this what we need

If you want live fire extinguisher training we will need a safe place to carry out the training. Therefore we need; a space about five car parking spaces in size. It will also need to be on flat hard standing and on a space that is owned or controlled by your company. In addition, the space should not be near a main road or public highway. Lastly, it must be away from combustible sources and also air intakes.

If you are still unsure, either call or email us for more advice.

Live fire extinguisher training – more info

All staff attending our fire training sessions will receive an IFSM certificate. Many managers ask how long our certificates last. Since fire safety is risk assessed, this will depend on the level of risk in your building. For example high risk premises such as care homes will need more training than single storey buildings used as small offices!

Your staff will get the opportunity of tackling a range of small fires. They will use water, foam and also CO2 fire extinguishers. Your team will be closely monitored by our staff so that we can insure everyone stays safe.

How to book fire training

Whether you want an in house course or a space on an open course either email or phone us.

We will send a booking email and ask for information; where the training will be carried out, an invoice address, the names of attendees and also agree our terms and conditions. Once we have the info we need, your course is booked!

Fire procedures – out of hours accounting methods

Fire proceduresfire procedures

Fire procedures – out of hours plans

Most buildings have fire procedures, but many do not have out of hours policies. Managers must have fire plans and also ensure persons safety at all times.

Out of  hours is usually before 0830 / 0900 and after 1700 / 1800 hours. The simple methods below will help ensure all persons are accounted for during these hours.

Fire procedures before regular hours ie 0700 to 0900

A register should be placed at the reception or entrance to the place of work. The list will have two columns. One for regular staff and also another for fire marshals. All staff must sign in if they get to their place of work before usual operating hours. In the event of a fire alarm all persons should leave the building and report to the assembly point. The first person to the fire register will operate as a roll call officer. They will call out all names and report any persons missing and their possible location to the fire service in the event of a fire.

However, as fire marshals enter the building, the organisation can revert to a sweep system. An additional column with fire marshals should also be listed on the fire register. If the building requires four fire marshals to operate a sweep system, the fourth fire marshal entering the building will sign in and then write SWEEP over the fire register. Any further persons entering the building will not require to sign in. In the event of fire alarm operating any person seeing the fire register will know that a roll call is not required. Fire marshals will report to the assembly point and call the fire service if a fire has been detected. (note: London Fire Brigade do operate an unwanted fire signal policy – check their website for details).

Fire procedures before regular hours ie 1730 to 2100

A roll call will be required. This entails a list of names of all persons in the building at the reception or entrance / exit of the building. Persons must sign out.

Fire marshals remaining in the building can still perform a sweep of their area as this may speed up an out of hours evacuation.

The first person to the reception or entrance / exit will act as a roll call officer.

Fire marshal training

Our fire marshal training includes accounting and evacuation plans of regular hours and out of hours plans. We also include information such as fire extinguishers, classes of fires and also fire drills. The programme includes hazard spotting, fire emergency plans, safety checks and in addition, disabled fire procedures.

Staff fire marshal training – So who needs it?

So who does need fire marshal trainingfire marshal training?

Staff fire marshal training

Staff Fire marshal training will be needed for all persons who help put the fire emergency plan into place. The Fire Safety Order requires a workplace to have a fire evacuation plan and also enough trained persons to put the plan into action when needed!

On every course we are asked “So how often do we need to do this training?”. The frequency of fire marshal training will depend on the level of risk in a place of work, so is not a question that has a generic answer.

Fire marshals in workplaces that are high risk will need more frequent staff  fire marshal training, perhaps every year or so or even more often. This will include places such as residential care homes, schools and buildings with a high life risk. Smaller premises with fewer staff may not be high risk so less frequent training will be ok.

What do fire marshals need to be taught?

There a number of different government workplace fire guides. They offer different advice since different types of workplace have different types of risk!

All fire marshals should know the content of their fire emergency plan. They will need to be aware of all fire evacuation plans. There may be a number plans for various times of the day. For example; there will need to be a plan for regular work times and also one for out of regular hours. A building may even need plans for lone workers and also persons who enter the building late at night such as cleaners.

They will need to be taught how to open doors safely and also how to identify which detector may have operated. This could help persons discover the exact location of a fire. Remember most fires will be small in the early stages so the location may not be obvious.

In summary fire marshal need to know:

  • Details of the fire emergency plan
  • Also the different evacuation plans in the building including arrangements for disabled persons
  • Learn how to open doors safely
  • How to identify which detector has operated so the location of the fire can be established
